WHAT
IS DATA RECOVERY?
|
Data Recovery
(as defined
in Wikipedia)
is the process of recovering data from
primary storage media when it cannot be accessed normally. This
can
be due to physical damage to the storage device or logical
damage to the
file system
that prevents it from being mounted
by the host operating system. |

A hard drive crash is a
common occurrence. Hard drive
manufacturers state that as many as 1.5% of the 200 million hard
drives sold each year will suffer a failure. Even the age of
the drive does not matter in some cases. A
brand new drive straight from the factory can sometimes have more
flaws than a drive that has been functioning properly
for several years.
So what can a consumer do? The best defense is to have a
backup system in place to prevent data loss. Unfortunately,
many users do not wish to invest in the time and cost involved in
backing up their data. These users will need to rely on a data
recovery company to recover their valuable data.
HOW IS
DATA RECOVERED?
Data recovery companies
use a variety of methods to recover data. Each failed drive presents
its own challenges which
can be addressed by trained data recovery technicians.
Experienced data recovery companies have the advantage of
modern technology and techniques for performing data recovery.
These companies have expert knowledge of how hard
disks function and have the capability to a repair a hard drive in a
Class 100 clean room environment.
IS
DATA RECOVERY ALWAYS SUCCESSFUL?
Even though many hard drives are recoverable (if recovered by an
experienced data recovery company), there are times when data
recovery may not be successful. If there is valuable data
present on the drive, it is important to contact a data recovery
company instead of trying to recover the data yourself. Since
not all failed drives are recoverable, it is cost-effective to use a
data recovery company that offers a free evaluation. Many
companies charge an evaluation fee- which can sometimes cost the
same as a brand new drive! It would be more cost-effective to
get a free evaluation to see if the data can be retrieved instead of
wasting money on a non-recoverable drive.
