Tips for Hard Drives Damaged By Water

The 2008 Hurricane Season is shaking things up for the U.S. and the Caribbean. The peak of hurricane season occurs on September 10, and there have been 10 named storms already. Hurricanes can bring significant disaster to residents not only in coastal areas, but hundreds of miles inland as well. Hurricane Gustav caused serious damage to residents in the Caribbean, and then made landfall on the Louisiana coast as a strong category 2 hurricane. The hurricane also affected many other states with widespread and record breaking floods.

We have received numerous emails from businesses and end-users who had damaged disks as a result of flooding. These businesses experienced downtime when their computer systems were damaged by water. Most of these people had no idea how to recover from this type of problem. For the victims of flood damaged hard drives, we have put together a short list of tips listed below:

1) Remove equipment from standing water and DO NOT POWER UP.
2) Remove the hard drive from the equipment.
3) DO NOT apply heat, freeze, or dry the hard drive.
4) DO NOT attempt to open the hard drive (doing so will spread debris across the platters)
5) Keep the hard drive in a ziplock bag along with a damp sponge so it remains DAMP.
6) Contact a Data Recovery Company - recommendations:
